Shaken baby syndrome is a common diagnosis for infants and children who
suffer bleeding on the brain (subdural hematomas) and in the back of the
eyes (retinal hemorrhages.) It is estimated that approximately 1,500 children
are diagnosed with shaken baby syndrome each year.
Over the last several years medical science has called the diagnosis
of shaken baby syndrome (SBS) into question. Contrary to much of the publicized
information about SBS, medical providers can not accurately determine
if bleeding on the brain or eyes is caused by an illness, disease, accident
or by child abuse. Despite this, doctors are encouraged under mandated
reporting laws to report cases involving subdural hematomas and retinal
hemorrhages and often criticized if they don’t. Unfortunately, many
of these cases are not properly investigated and innocent people are charged
with felony child abuse.
The difficulty in many so-called shaken baby cases is that there a number
of diseases, illnesses and accidental causes, which mimic the injuries
once thought as characteristic only of SBS. Not all individuals
accused of shaken baby syndrome are guilty of child abuse. In
fact, many individuals have been falsely accused of crimes against the
children they adore. The tragedy is once a child is labeled as abused
doctors no longer pursue any differential diagnosis and quite often the
child’s real disorder (e.g. illnesses, accidental causes, etc.)
goes undiagnosed and untreated.
Russell, Kaye and Alex Maze are victims of this faulty system. The price
that they have paid, hoping that science and the truth would prevail,
ultimately resulted in losing their child to a chronic illness and Russell
being charged with murder. Alex passed leaving a legacy of hope. His parents
and many of us touched by this case truly believe Alex’s case and
medical history will contribute to our knowledge about the medical mysteries
involved in these cases. We hope that you will see the injustice in these
cases and help us to find truth for the Maze family and others who are
falsely accused.
